Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus Holds Press Conference to Announce Leadership and Legislative Priorities

ATLANTA (January 19, 2023) | On Tuesday, the Georgia Legislative Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Caucus, a bipartisan bicameral caucus, held a press conference to announce leadership along with legislative priorities for the 2023 Legislative Session.

The Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus is comprised of eleven members from both the Georgia Senate and the Georgia House. The caucus, chaired by Rep. Michelle Au (D – Johns Creek), highlighted numerous legislative priorities they will be focusing on during the 2023 Legislative Session. Some of these priorities include increasing Asian American voter engagement and turnout along with allowing for all graduates from Georgia high schools to be eligible for in-state tuition.

The Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus also detailed their goal in working with other minority caucuses to accomplish shared legislative goals that affect their communities, being joined by speakers Rep. Pedro Marin (D – Duluth) and Sen. Nikki Merritt (D – Grayson), Vice Chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus.

“This is a groundbreaking moment. It is planting the seeds to broaden the voices and the advocacy in the Georgia General Assembly,” said Sen. Merritt. “The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus looks forward to engaging in cross-cultural dialogue and creative problem solving to help highlight the issues that are uniquely challenging to our minority communities across the state. We are looking forward in expanding adequate representation across the state of Georgia.”

The Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus will continue to convene throughout the 2023 Legislative Session in addressing key issues. Further events to be held by the caucus will be announced at later dates.
