ATLANTA (May 18, 2023) | On Tuesday, Senator Jason Esteves (D – Atlanta) was appointed to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy by Lt. Governor Burt Jones. The Georgia Council on Literacy was created by Senate Bill 211 during the 2023 Georgia Legislative Session and will be comprised of ten members of the Georgia Legislature and twenty citizen members who are experts in literacy and education.
“I look forward to serving as a member of the Georgia Council on Literacy,” said Sen. Esteves. “As a former educator and parent, I have witnessed firsthand the impacts of declining literacy rates in our classrooms. The Council reflects an important step towards combatting this issue and working towards the goal of providing every student with a quality education. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. I am eager to work with my esteemed colleagues of the Georgia General Assembly and education experts to thoughtfully evaluate our state literacy challenges and introduce legislative solutions.”
The Council will evaluate the problems related to state literacy outcomes and recommend improvements. The Council will hold meetings throughout the state, with dates and locations to be announced at a later time.
