ATLANTA (May 22, 2023) | On May 16, State Senator Freddie Powell-Sims (D – Dawson) was appointed to serve as a member of the Georgia Council on Literacy. The Georgia Council on Literacy was created by Senate Bill 211 during the 2023 Georgia Legislative Session. The Council will comprise ten members of the Georgia Legislature and twenty citizen members who are experts in literacy and education.
“I am honored to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy and provide new perspectives to initiatives that will have a lasting impact on Georgia’s youth,” said Sen. Powell-Sims. “Literacy is the cornerstone of personal and societal growth and opens the door to endless opportunities. It is imperative that every Georgian has access to a quality education and the tools they need to succeed. As a former educator, I understand the educational challenges that our schools face across the state. I am excited to work with members of this Council who will bring a mix of expertise, legislative experience and dedication to the table. Together, we can explore avenues that enhance Georgia’s literacy rates and create a more prosperous Georgia. I want to thank Lt. Governor Jones for appointing me to the Council and I am eager to get started.”
The Council will be responsible for evaluating the problems related to state literacy outcomes and making recommendations on improving this issue through legislation. The Council will hold meetings throughout the state, with dates and locations to be announced at a later time.
