Sen. Harold Jones Appointed to Senate Law Enforcement Reform Study Committee

ATLANTA (August 19, 2020) | Last week, Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan appointed Sen. Harold Jones (D – Augusta) to the Senate Law Enforcement Reform Study Committee.

“Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed and the Governor signed into law a bill establishing a hate crime statute in Georgia,” said Sen. Jones. “While this was an important and necessary step, it failed to address the use of force tactics implemented by law enforcement officers, which have shown the potential to unfairly target minority communities. I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve on this study committee to begin the dialogue on steps we can take to better ensure the safety of not only our law enforcement officers, but also the safety of those they are sworn to protect. I am eager to begin working with Chairman Cowsert and the other members of the committee to study possible solutions to this important and timely issue.”

The Senate Study Committee on Law Enforcement Reform was established through the passage of Senate Resolution 1007 during the 2020 Legislative Session. The study committee is tasked with identifying areas where state laws may need revision when it comes to issues such as oversight, the use of lethal and nonlethal force, practices that may require more strict regulation including the use of chokeholds, and techniques for de-escalation.
