ATLANTA (February 2, 2012) – Senate Bill 227, sponsored by Sen. Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville), passed the Georgia Senate today with a 42-11 vote. If enacted, this bill will allow home-school intent and attendance records to be filed electronically with the Georgia Department of Education.
“This bill removes an unfunded and burdensome mandate on local school superintendents,” said Sen. Loudermilk. “Home schooling reports will be centralized in one location rather than at local school districts, where a large part of these reports remain untouched until a student needs proof of education in order to apply for a Georgia driver’s license. The home school community, local school superintendents and the Department of Education all support this much simpler and streamlined process.”
In 2011, the Georgia State Education Finance Study Commission was created in order to review funding practices for Georgia schools and make recommendations in the areas of core student funding, funding equity, state and local funding partnerships, among others. SB 227 is a direct response to a recommendation passed by the Commission.
SB 227 will now travel to the House of Representatives for a vote.
