Sen. Seay Recognizes Milken Award Educator

ATLANTA (February 2, 2012) – Sen. Valencia Seay (D-Riverdale) authored Senate Resolution 649 to honor Ms. Shekema Silveri, a constituent from Clayton County who received the 2011 Milken Educator Award.

“Ms. Silveri epitomizes Georgia’s strong education system with her compassionate teaching methods that reach outside the classroom,” said Sen. Seay.  “She is a shining example of everything a teacher and a mentor should be for our students and our community at large.”

The Milken Educator Award is granted by the Milken Family Foundation, the nation’s preeminent teacher recognition program.  The foundation has recognized 2,500 recipients with their national acclamation since its start in 1987.  The Milken Family Foundation opened its doors in Georgia in 1990 and has since honored more than 80 educators.

“Shekema Silveri works tirelessly to maximize the potential of every student,” said Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards. “Always on the cusp of new resources and technology, she creates rich and engaging lessons that instill a love of learning in her students.  Following Shekema’s own example, her students know that achieving dreams are possible with dedication and persistence.
