ATLANTA (Feb. 13, 2024) – Today, Democratic Whip Sen. Harold Jones II (D-Augusta) made the following statement regarding his recent appointment to the Senate Special Committee on Investigations:
“As a member of this committee, I am tasked with examining the various allegations related to the investigation of former President Donald Trump alongside my colleagues who are also called to serve on this committee. Despite my opposition to the bill, it is necessary to clarify that I do not seek to impede any investigations against former President Trump. My foremost commitment is to fairness, and I earnestly hope that the committee will uphold this principle throughout its proceedings.
Our inaugural meeting took place on February 9th, and I was encouraged by the willingness of the Senate Majority Party to collaborate with the Minority Party in establishing the committee rules. I am optimistic that this spirit of cooperation will persist throughout our future meetings.
Although I maintain reservations about the necessity of this committee, I am dedicated to facilitating discussions focused on relevant facts. It is my priority to prevent the committee from devolving into an unnecessary partisan spectacle, while also ensuring that investigations related to former President Trump proceed justly.”
The Senate Special Committee on Investigations was established pursuant to Senate Resolution 465. For more information on SR 465, you may read here.
