Sexual Extortion Bill Passes Committee

ATLANTA (March 2, 2018) | Sen. Harold Jones II (D – Augusta) recently presented Senate Bill 314 to the Senate Judiciary Committee. SB 314 outlines the crime of sexual extortion and the penalties associated with committing the crime.

“As our access to technology grows, it’s important that our laws keep up,” said Sen. Jones. “This bill fills in a needed gap in our state’s current law and will help protect victims of coerced sexual conduct. Sexual extortion is a sex crime and deserves to be punished as such. I am thankful that the Judiciary Committee favorably passed out this bill and I look forward to continuing to work with my Senate colleagues to make this bill law.”

Under SB 314, sexual extortion is defined as coercing an individual to send images of sexually explicit conduct, perform sexual explicit conduct or to send images involving nudity. Sexual extortion would be a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for one to 15 years. SB 314 would also require that anyone convicted of sexual extortion after June 30, 2018, register with the State Sexual Offender Registry. SB 314 favorably passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.
