ATLANTA (June 3, 2022) | On June 1, 2022, Sen. Sonya Halpern (D – Atlanta) was appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve as chair of the Senate Study Committee on Excellence, Innovation and Technology at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
“I am proud of the progress our state has made in giving students at HBCUs growing opportunities to learn and succeed beyond the classroom and am honored to serve as chair of this study committee,” said Sen. Halpern. “It is my hope that this study committee will help identify continuing opportunities for upcoming graduates to succeed in high-demand career fields. Career opportunities in our state are always evolving and the diversity of our workforce is a stronghold that makes me proud to be a Georgian. I look forward to ensuring that opportunities for these students are protected in our current economy and will work to make sure that every student is proud to be a Georgian.”
The Senate Study Committee on Excellence, Innovation and Technology at Historically Black Colleges and Universities was established during the 2022 Legislative Session through Senate Resolution 329. The study committee will consist of five members and is tasked with further identifying ways to support Georgia’s HBCUs in a shifting economy.
