ATLANTA (April 8, 2022) | Last Saturday, April 2, 2022, Sen. Sonya Halpern (D – Atlanta) served as the keynote speaker for Nashville’s MLK Day of Service at the Tennessee State University Gentry Center. This annual day of service brings together hundreds of student volunteers from Nashville-area colleges and universities to continue the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“I am constantly inspired by the life and service of Martin Luther King and was honored by the invitation to speak on his greatness,” said Sen. Halpern. “We all know what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for, even though we can’t all comprehend the magnitude of his struggles. He fought for our rights, for equality, for justice, and he was never afraid to shed blood in those fights. Our country may not be perfect, but it is certainly better than it would have been without him and the countless, nameless other heroes who marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge all the way back in 1965.
Dr. King had a way of finding just the right words to change someone’s mind and to change someone’s heart. He had the conviction to tirelessly pursue justice for those who had been wronged, and his strength of character was incomparable. My message to all young people listening is that you have more to offer than you think and we can all do justice to Dr. King’s memory by simple acts of kindness. Great deeds are the stuff of legends and novels, but small acts of love are life changing. It doesn’t matter how you serve, you just have to serve.”
After the opening program in the Gentry Center on the campus of Tennessee State University, volunteers went to different sites to perform acts of service.
