Senator Jack Murphy to Chair Senate Brewpubs & Alcoholic Beverages Tastings Study Committee

ATLANTA (June 10, 2013) – Senator Jack Murphy (R-Cumming) has been selected to serve as chair of the Senate Brewpubs and Alcoholic Beverages Tastings Study Committee.  Over the next several months, this study committee will evaluate proposed changes to laws on brewpubs and certain permit licenses to conduct alcoholic tastings.

“The Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee listened to many testimonies regarding filed legislation on brewpubs and alcoholic tastings during the legislative session,” said Sen. Murphy.  “As chairman, I saw the merit in the different arguments and wanted to further analyze the impact of these bills.  In this committee, we will review the three-tier distribution system of alcoholic beverages to ensure revised laws do not impact competition and jeopardize public safety.”

“I’m happy to appoint Senator Murphy to the Study Committee on Brewpubs and Alcoholic Beverages Tastings and look forward to thoroughly evaluating their findings,” Lt. Governor Casey Cagle said. “Senator Murphy has been a leader on this issue and I’m thankful he’s lending his time and expertise to the important work this committee will perform.”

The Senate Brewpubs and Alcoholic Beverages Tastings Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 427 during the 2013 legislative session.

Other appointed members to this Senate study committee include:

  • Sen. Frank Ginn
  • Sen. Steve Henson
  • Sen. Burt Jones
  • Sen. David Shafer – Ex-Officio
  • Sen. Cecil Staton

Each study committee will present its findings—and any resulting proposed legislation—by December 2013.
