ATLANTA (June 21, 2023) | On June 9, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education, Senator Billy Hickman (R – Statesboro), was appointed to serve as a member of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) by Governor Brian P. Kemp.
“As an advocate for education, I am honored to be able to provide my expertise as a member of the SREB,” said Sen. Hickman. “Georgia has proven itself as a leader in the southern region through recent statewide investments in education. Our state has concentrated our efforts on supporting schools through increased teacher salaries, statewide literacy initiatives and expanded broadband access in rural areas. This board provides an opportunity to impart our wisdom and strategy to other states in the southern region who want to achieve a similar success. Through this experience, I hope to gain further insight on the education initiatives working in other southern states that can inspire future legislation in Georgia. I look forward working alongside Representative Matt Dubnik (R – Gainesville) and Governor Kemp in his capacity as the newly elected SREB Chair in improving education for all.”
The Southern Regional Education Board is an 80-member collaborative board comprised of governors, legislators and state education leaders who aim to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through doctoral education. More information on SREB can be found here.
