Sen. Lester Jackson Leads Passage of Senate Bill 318 through Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee

lesterATLANTA (Feb. 6, 2014) | Yesterday, Sen. Lester Jackson (D- Savannah) led the passage of Senate Bill 318 out of the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee.  SB 318 would authorize the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises on Sundays during the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and other spirited holidays.

“Each year over one million visitors come to Savannah to experience our incredible St. Patrick’s Day celebration,” said Sen. Jackson.  “This bill simply ensures that local citizens and visitors can celebrate special holidays on Sunday the same way they would on any other day of the week.  Furthermore, small businesses would reap the economic benefits from increased sales on any given holiday.”

Sen. Jackson authored SB 318 to accomplish three goals:  increase state revenue, promote tourism both in Savannah and throughout the state, and to allow any place of business that sells alcohol the same opportunity for sales growth.  If passed, the bill would permit cities and counties that already allow the sale of alcohol for consumption to adopt a resolution or ordinance allowing the sale of alcohol from 12:30 P.M. until 12:00 midnight on any Sunday on which any spirited holiday falls.
