ATLANTA (February 6, 2014) | Sen. Judson Hill (R – Marietta) presented Senate Resolution 841 today, honoring the cultural, economic and educational relationships between the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the State of Georgia. Representatives from the British Consulate-General Atlanta were present to accept the resolution, including Consul General Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford.
“The British Consulate-General Atlanta has done a tremendous job promoting economic development and establishing policy initiatives that will continue to strengthen the link between our two countries. It was an honor to present SR 841 to Consul General Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford and his staff today in the Senate chamber. Our two nations are bound together by shared history, a shared faith, a common language, a common legal system as well as kinship ties that reach back hundreds of years. No state shares a greater affection for the people of the United Kingdom and to our special relationship than we here in the state of Georgia,” said Sen. Hill.
SR 841 specifically recognizes the United Kingdom’s economic investment in Georgia, which is home to approximately 325 United Kingdom businesses, including 55 manufacturing operations, and employs more than 18,000 Georgians. United Kingdom exports to Georgia total $1.132 billion and include gas turbines, civilian aircraft and parts, woodpulp, fuel, tractors, and motor vehicles. Imports from the United Kingdom to Georgia total $1.9 billion and include aircraft parts, pharmaceutical products, motor vehicles, and electrical machinery.
Several significant cultural events and partnerships were also acknowledged in SR 841, including the historically strong military relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. Since 2001, British troops have served alongside United States military personnel in Afghanistan, including individuals from the Georgia National Guard. The British Royal Navy has also served with U.S. Navy at Kings Bay Naval Base in Camden County, Georgia.
SR 841 also pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ United States concert tour, which included a performance at Atlanta Stadium on August 15, 1965.
Georgia is proud to serve as home to the British Consulate-General Atlanta, who provides support for the wide variety of issues important to the relationship between the two countries. In addition to Georgia, the British Consulate-General Atlanta’s jurisdiction includes the states of Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
