Sen. Emanuel Jones Appointed to Lead Senate Study Committee on Safe Firearm Storage

ATLANTA (May 29, 2024) — Last week, Sen. Emanuel Jones (D–Decatur) was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Safe Firearm Storage by Lt. Governor Burt Jones. Additional Senate members appointed to serve on the study committee include Sen. Frank Ginn (R–Danielsville), Sen. Marty Harbin (R–Tyrone), Sen. David Lucas (D–Macon) and Sen. Ben Watson (R–Savannah).

“Ensuring the safe storage of firearms is critical to reducing firearm violence and preventing accidental deaths,” said Sen. Jones. “With an estimated 5.4 million American children living in homes with access to loaded and unlocked firearms, the importance of this issue cannot be overstated. As Chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Safe Firearm Storage, I am committed to thoroughly exploring effective protection measures, including current pediatric screening protocols and the potential benefits of safe storage mandates. This committee’s work is vital to safeguarding our communities and preventing future harm for our children.”

The committee is tasked with undertaking a study of the conditions, needs, issues and problems related to safe firearm storage and recommending any action or legislation. The Senate Study Committee on Safe Firearm Storage was created during the 2024 Legislative Session. Future meetings of the committee will be announced at a later date.
