ATLANTA (February 7, 2012) – Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Senator Josh McKoon (R- Columbus) welcomed Archbishop Wilton Gregory of the Archdiocese of Atlanta to serve as Chaplain of the Day on February 7, 2012 in the State Senate.
“Today we were reminded to fulfill one of our greatest duties as elected officials; to faithfully serve those who elected us,” said Sen. McKoon. “As part of his devotional to the Senate Chamber, Archbishop Gregory challenged us all to have compassion for those around us and follow in Jesus’ footsteps by serving our families, friends and constituents.
“It was an honor to welcome Archbishop Gregory to the Senate today. “The tradition of the Senate to begin each day with a devotional and prayer allows us to set our mind and heart in the right place as we make important policy decisions. As we face daunting challenges during this session, I’m confident the Senate will answer the call to serve. Today, Archbishop Gregory encouraged Senators and inspired each of us to lead our state in the right direction,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.”
On Dec. 9, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Gregory as the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. He was installed on Jan. 17, 2005. Archbishop Gregory has written extensively on a variety of church issues ranging from pastoral statements to euthanasia. He has also published numerous articles on the subject of liturgy, particularly focused on the African-American community.
