ATLANTA (April 21, 2023) | Today, the DeKalb County Legislative Delegation Chairs, state Senator Kim Jackson (D – Stone Mountain) and state Representative Karla Drenner (D – Avondale Estates), joined with state Representative Becky Evans (D – Atlanta) to announce the application deadline for candidates who wish to be considered for appointment to the DeKalb Ethics Board.
“The Senate and House DeKalb Legislative Delegations have received a number of qualified nominations to the DeKalb County Ethics Board over six weeks,” said Sen. Jackson and Rep. Drenner. “We opened up this process weeks ago after reading press coverage following the resignation of several past board members. Our role here as representatives of the appointing authorities is only to fill the vacancies on the board, and setting a deadline to close the application window means we can begin to interview candidates. We hope that in filling these vacancies quickly, the fully appointed Board can return to its focus on educating the public on the conduct expected from our government and ensuring government compliance with the Code of Ethics. We want to thank all who have applied and we look forward to starting the interview process.”
The Chairs of the DeKalb House and Senate Legislative Delegations initially issued a call for nominations to the DeKalb Board of Ethics on March 9, 2023. The Board’s appointment process, ethical standards and duties were updated by HB 1423, which passed during the 2020 Legislative Session. These changes were enacted through a successful ballot referendum that reconstituted the Board of Ethics in 2021. Due to recent resignations, there are five vacancies that the appointing authorities are working to fill.
The House and Senate DeKalb County Legislative Delegations ask that a candidate complete his or her application at: https://tinyurl.com/3va4syu3 by Sunday, May 7th. The Senate has three appointments and the House has two appointments. Finalist interviews will be conducted the week of May 22 – 26. The announcement of appointees will take place Friday, June 9th, with the goal being that all of the new members are seated by the June 15 board meeting. Questions about the appointment process can be directed to: appointment.dekalb.ethics@gmail.com.
