VOTE: BE Heard and BE Counted

By Sen. Greg Goggans

The United States Constitution affords us the right to vote. It is one of the most important liberties we are granted as citizens. The General Election is your opportunity to have a say in how laws are written and what changes are made to the Georgia Constitution. Even here in South Georgia, you have a say in what is going on under the Gold Dome and in the nation’s Capitol. With a major population shift to metro Atlanta and North Georgia, it is even more important for the rest of Georgia to hear your voices loudly and clearly. They should know you are paying attention. Encourage your friends, loved ones and neighbors to go vote and have their voices heard at the state Capitol. Continue reading “VOTE: BE Heard and BE Counted”

Our state and national constitutions are the foundations upon which our government was established.  While the Constitution is a blueprint for how the government is organized, it also defines and protects the rights and liberties of individuals.  That’s why the process to change the Constitution was made to be so difficult.  Proposed changes must pass both the House and Senate by at least a two-thirds vote.  The amendments then go to the people who vote to approve or reject the changes.

Sen. Vincent Fort urges Georgia PSC to Conduct Statewide Study of Gas Pipeline Safety

ATLANTA (Sept. 15, 2010) – State Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) formally requested Wednesday that the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) conduct a comprehensive safety study of the state’s gas pipeline infrastructure.  In an official letter to Commissioner Chuck Eaton, Fort urged the PSC to undertake the study in the wake of last week’s tragic explosion of a gas pipeline in San Bruno, CA.

Fort’s letter to Commissioner Eaton reads in part:

“I urge you to initiate a safety study of natural gas pipelines in Georgia as soon as possible.  The study should involve the types of pipelines installed, the age of pipelines, and the need to replace pipelines as is occurring in other states, among other things.

The recent explosion of a gas pipeline in San Bruno, California illustrates how dangerous these pipelines are. Since 1990, more than 2,800 gas pipeline accidents have been reported with over a third causing death.  As you know, the issue of natural gas pipeline safety has become critical in my district since Georgia Power is placing a 36 inch natural gas pipeline in the heart of many neighborhoods.  It is important that we determine the safety of pipelines in order to protect the citizens of Georgia.”
