ATLANTA (January 6, 2021) |In response to the publicly disclosed phone call between United States President Donald Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) Chairwoman State Senator Tonya P. Anderson issues the following statement:
“The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is deeply concerned about the actions taken by President Trump to pressure state election officials to ‘recalculate’ the November 3rd general election outcome.
Over five million Georgians cast their ballot for the general election via absentee and early voting or on Election Day. They entrusted county and state election officials to accurately tabulate their vote, which based on numerous audits, did occur.
The people of Georgia have spoken. Their choice is clear. Undermining the will of our voters goes against everything we stand for as a country. More important, it goes against the men and women who fought to ensure all citizens have a right to vote.
We agree with our colleagues who argue the vote is sacrosanct and should be safeguarded. Yet, not for the benefit of one person. Our responsibility, as a legislative body, is to the residents of this state. Moving forward, we are glad to work collaboratively on voter registration and election policies to further empower Georgians to speak out with their ballots.
An engaged citizenry leads to a more accountable and transparent democracy. I believe we all want that for our state and country.” Established in 1975, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprising of 65 Georgia House and Senate members.
