ATLANTA (September 3, 2022) | In response to the closing of the Atlanta Medical Center, Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Chairwoman Senator Tonya Anderson (D – Lithonia) issues the following statement:
“We are deeply concerned about the actions taken by Wellstar Health System to close another metro Atlanta medical facility that served low-income communities. And again, these actions seemed to occur without consulting local government and other city stakeholders who could have collaboratively developed a strategy to keep Atlanta Medical Center open.
The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus requests to hear from Wellstar leadership to better understand the decision-making process that led to closing an important Atlanta medical institution in. Too many people are severely impacted due to a loss of vital medical services, employment, and community engagement.
As a state, we cannot continue to lose hospitals, especially in low-income and rural communities. There needs to be state action to invest in our healthcare infrastructure so that all Georgians, regardless of where you live, can access the medical services they need to enjoy health and productive lives. To do otherwise is inviting a crisis to our doorstep.”
