Statement by the Chairwoman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Senator Tonya Anderson, on Behalf of Former GLBC Member Stacey Abrams Nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize

ATLANTA (February 2, 2021) | In response to news of former Georgia gubernatorial candidate and house minority leader Stacey Abrams being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) Chairwoman State Senator Tonya P. Anderson (D – Lithonia) issues the following statement:

“The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is proud to hear one of our own, former house minority leader, 2018 gubernatorial candidate, and GLBC member Stacey Abrams has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Her effort to protect the Constitutional voting rights of all Americans has become a movement towards greater justice and equity, especially for communities whose voices continue to be attacked by pernicious policies committed to voter suppression and disenfranchisement.

Georgia is experiencing a seismic political shift because leaders like Stacey Abrams sought to invest time, energy, and resources into Georgians who represent the future of our state and region. Now, members of the state legislature are mounting an offensive to undermine the gains we achieved in 2020.

We will not allow Georgia to slip into the shadows of the past. It is a new day where freedom and justice will prevail.

Congratulations Stacey Abrams for receiving such an honor and distinction. It is well deserved. We look forward to celebrating your receiving the prize.”

Established in 1975, the GLBC is a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprising of 65 Georgia House and Senate members.
