Senator Sheikh Rahman on Metro Atlanta Shootings

ATLANTA (March 17, 2021) | In response to the murders in the metro Atlanta region yesterday, including the deaths of several women of Asian descent, Senator Sheikh Rahman (D – Lawrenceville) issued the following statement:

“What happened yesterday in metro Atlanta was a horrifying and disturbing example of targeted racial violence. This tragic attack never should have happened. These malicious crimes are taking place in our own backyards. We must come together and stand up against xenophobia and any hate crimes committed against Asian Americans or anyone in our communities.

I am horrified, outraged and devastated by this violence and deeply concerned for the members of the Asian American community in Georgia and across the country. Hate must not have a home in America or anywhere. My family and I are praying for the victims of this horrific act of violence.

It was just last year that the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 426, the Hate Crimes bill. I ask that we continue to support the victims of hate crimes in Georgia by speaking up immediately against xenophobia, hate and violence directed towards the Asian American community. We must never stop fighting against hate.”
