Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Chairwoman Sen. Tonya Anderson on Metro Atlanta Shootings

ATLANTA (March 17, 2021) | In response to the alleged targeted murder of Asian women in the Metro Atlanta region, Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Chair Senator Tonya Anderson (D – Lithonia)  issued the following statement:

“The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) is saddened and appalled by the wanton display of violence that took place last night. This morning eight people are dead, six being Asian women, for reasons yet discovered. Our hearts and prayers go to the families and friends of the deceased. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly of Asian or Pacific Island identity in vehemently condemning this senseless act of violence.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated occurrence. There are reports of at least 500 anti-Asian attacks nationally within the last two months, many stemming from unsubstantiated accusations that Asians are responsible for COVID-19. That is just patently false. It is a narrative based on fear and hate. It is a narrative we at the Caucus recognize too well.

As lawmakers we cannot stand idly by when violence and hate come to our doorstep. We must take swift action so individuals and organizations who promote hate understand Georgia will not cower, but stand firm on our principles of freedom, justice, inclusion, and equality.

Last year we adopted hate crimes legislation in response to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. This year let’s continue our progress by passing House Bill 479 to end citizen arrest and House Bill 716, legislation introduced by GLBC Vice Chair Representative Derrick Jackson to protect Georgia from domestic terrorism.

As a Caucus and as a state we say no to hate and to violence.”

Established in 1975, the GLBC is a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprising of 65 Georgia House and Senate members.
