Senator Kim Jackson Sworn into Office as Georgia’s First LGBTQ State Senator

ATLANTA (January 12, 2021) | On Monday, January 11th, Sen. Kim Jackson (D – Stone Mountain) was officially sworn into the Georgia Senate to represent Senate District 41 and is recognized as Georgia’s first LGBTQ State Senator.

“I am honored to be afforded the opportunity to represent the people of Senate District 41 in the state Capitol and I am humbled by the trust displayed in me,” said Sen. Jackson. “As the hardworking legislatures before me have demonstrated, we must always continue to promote legislation that supports the needs and concerns of every Georgian. I am eager to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and in both Chambers, to ensure all voices are heard and represented.”

To commemorate this special occasion, Sen. Jackson was sworn in on the Bible that belonged to her maternal grandparents. As a symbol of leadership and faith, Sen. Jackson wore a stole passed down from the first Black woman to ever be ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church: The Reverend Pauli Murray.

Sen. Jackson was elected to serve Senate District 41 which includes portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. Under the ceremonial procedures associated with the swearing in, Sen. Jackson joined ten newly elected senators and 46 returning senators to take the oath of office administered by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charlie Bethel in the Senate Chamber.
