ATLANTA (July 1, 2019) | Last Friday, Senator John Albers (R – Roswell) was appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve on the Senate Study Committee on Protection from Sexual Predators.
“Protecting the public, especially our children, from individuals who exhibit predatory sexual behavior is of the upmost importance,” said Sen. Albers. “While I respect the decision of the Georgia Supreme Court, we must look at alternative ways to supervise those who have been charged and convicted as sex offenders. I look forward to working with my colleagues, members of the public safety and judicial communities and the general public on the best steps moving forward to ensure our citizens’ safety is always protected.”
The Senate Study Committee on Protection from Sexual Predators was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 371. The five members on the study committee will review the implications of the Supreme Court of Georgia Park v. State case which “found that the statutory authorization of lifetime satellite based monitoring of sex offenders who are no longer serving any part of their sentences was unconstitutional pursuant to the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.” As a result of this court decision, the study committee’s goal is to determine what alternative means and procedures can be put into place to ensure those who have a history of predatory sexual behavior are properly monitored. The committee must report its findings on or before December 1, 2019.
