ATLANTA (September 10, 2020) | Sen. Tyler Harper (R – Ocilla) was recently elected to serve as Vice Chair of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) Agriculture & Rural Development Committee.

“Being elected by my peers to serve as the Vice Chair of the Southern Legislative Conference Agriculture and Rural Development Committee is a privilege and responsibility that I do not take lightly,” said Sen. Harper. “I look forward to working with Sen. Murdock and our fellow committee members to stimulate agribusiness and economic development opportunities across rural America.”

The mission of the SLC is to promote and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation among its 15 member states. As Vice Chair of the Agriculture & Rural Development Committee, Sen. Harper will assist the committee’s chair, Oklahoma State Senator Casey Murdock, in guiding the committee’s policy focus and projects, including programming for the 75th SLC Annual Meeting, which will mark the organization’s 75th anniversary, July 10 – 14, 2021, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Recent policy and program issues addressed by the committee include federal assistance to farms amid the COVID-19 pandemic, implications of recent trade agreements for the American farm, access to mental health in rural communities and the agricultural impact of Hurricane Michael in 2018.
