Sen. Tyler Harper Announces Legislation Creating the Outdoor Passport License Program

ATLANTA (January 25, 2018)  | Recently, Sen. Tyler Harper (R – Ocilla) with Lt. Governor Casey Cagle introduced the Georgia Youth Outdoors Passport Act, designed to promote Georgia’s wealth of opportunities for recreational outdoor activities to Georgia’s youth.

“Outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing, have long been staples of Georgia’s culture and identity,” said Sen. Harper. “Unfortunately, too many of our state’s youth are passing up on the opportunity to participate in these and other forms of outdoor recreation. The Georgia Youth Outdoors Passport Act will help our kids connect with and embrace Georgia’s history of outdoor recreation and will teach them to be good stewards of the environment. I am thankful to Lt. Governor Cagle for his support of this legislation and I am eager to see it signed into law.”

“It’s concerning that every year fewer Georgians are participating in hunting and fishing activities across our state. This reduces the resources we have available to protect and preserve Georgia’s natural habitat, making it harder to keep rangers in the field enforcing our safe hunting and fishing laws. This program will help create a pathway for new hunters and anglers to learn the sport and develop a lifetime of recreation that will teach them the importance of the natural world and help them put food on the table,” said Lt. Governor Cagle.

The Outdoor Passport License Program would allow those who are new to fishing and hunting to receive an Outdoor Passport License. This new license would allow these individuals the ability to hunt and fish at a lower cost throughout their first year in the program. The legislation also includes discounted licenses for those who complete the program and would establish a mentor training program through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
