Sen. Tonya Anderson and Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Release Statement on the Passing of United States Senator Max Cleland

ATLANTA (November 9, 2021) | In response to the unfortunate passing of former Veterans Affairs Administrator and United States Senator Max Cleland, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) Chairwoman State Senator Tonya P. Anderson (D – Lithonia) issues the following statement:

“The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is saddened to hear about the passing of Senator Max Cleland, one of Georgia’s greatest public servants. We offer our prayers and condolences to his family, friends, and those who knew him best.

After serving his country in Vietnam, where he received a Silver and Bronze Star, Cleland had an illustrious political career as a Georgia state senator, overseeing the U.S. Veterans Administration, as Georgia Secretary of State, United States Senator, and as a federal appointee to various agencies.

He was a son of DeKalb County and a child of the city of Lithonia. I am proud to have served his community as Mayor, State Representative, and now State Senator. He was a shining example of resiliency, determination, and compassion for others.

Sen. Cleland, you exemplified what it meant to be an American – service, valor, respect, honor.

Thank you for your service.”

Established in 1975, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprising of 68 Georgia House and Senate members.
