ATLANTA (May 3, 2024) — Majority Whip Sen. Randy Robertson (R–Cataula) joined Governor Brian P. Kemp at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center Wednesday, May 1, for the signing of public safety legislation, including Senate Bill 63, a measure which he authored. The bill clarifies that no bail schedule, local standing order, official policy or local ordinance can require the unsecured judicial release of an accused individual before appearing in front of a judge. Furthermore, the legislation adds several additional bail-restricted offenses.
Sen. Robertson spoke highly of the measure, saying, “This is a strong piece of legislation that takes additional steps to protect Georgia’s communities while providing much-needed clarity for our state’s bail bond system. I think it’s only appropriate that this bill gain signature alongside so many other important public safety initiatives at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. I would like to thank the countless individuals, including Rep. Houston Gaines (R–Athens), who have worked alongside me to ensure that we would be standing here today, signing this bill into law for the good of every Georgian.”
Additionally, the legislation holds bail bond organizations liable should their client ultimately be unable to pay their debts. The act takes effect on July 1, 2024 and can be read in full here.
