Sen. Harold Jones II Supports Community Schools Legislation

ATLANTA (February 17, 2015)  |  Sen. Harold Jones II (D – Augusta) today signed on in support of a bill which aims to help Georgia’s failing schools. The bill would create the “Unlocking the Promise” community schools program, a program designed to target the causes of failed schools.

“We need to look at schools holistically,” said Sen. Jones. “Schools often do poorly because of underlying issues in the community, such as poverty and a lack of parental support. This program would award grants so that failing schools can offer additional services, such as parental education programs, after-school programs, and job and career training.”
The “community schools” model has taken root in other states, most notably in Kentucky, where school performance rose from 48th to 33rd in the nation.
There are approximately 250 Georgia schools that would be eligible under the program.
