ATLANTA (June 25, 2019) | Sen. Harold Jones II (D – Augusta) was recently appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve on the Senate Study Committee on Revising Voting Rights for Nonviolent Felony Offenders.
“For several years I, and several of my colleagues in the General Assembly, have worked on legislation that would restore voting rights for certain non-violent felony offenders,” said Sen. Jones. “Too many individuals in our state have had their voting rights removed for the rest of their lives simply because of a small mistake they may have made in their past. I am thankful for Lt. Governor Duncan for including me in this important committee and I am eager to get to work with my fellow committee members to examine solutions that will enhance the rights of all citizens in our state, while still balancing public safety concerns.”
The Senate Study Committee on Revising Voting Rights for Nonviolent Felony Offenders was created through the passage of Senate Resolution 153, sponsored by Sen. Jones. The Committee is composed of five members and will be tasked with examining the possibility of extending voting eligibility to certain non-violent felony offenders. The committee will submit a report of its findings no later than December 1, 2019.
