Sen. Harold Jones Appointed Chairman of Senate Study Committee on Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Ending Food Deserts

ATLANTA (July 8, 2021) | Last week, Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan appointed Sen. Harold Jones II (D – Augusta) to serve as Chairman of Senate Study Committee on Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Ending Food Deserts.

“I am honored to be named chair of the Senate Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Ending Food Deserts Study Committee,” said Sen. Jones. “Whether we are discussing urban or rural areas, many of our citizens are having difficulty gaining access to fresh and healthy foods. We need to ascertain what help, if any, the state can provide in helping solve this issue.”

The Senate Study Committee on Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Ending Food Deserts was created during the 2021 Legislative Session with the passage of Senate Resolution 283. The Committee will be tasked with determining how many Georgians live in food deserts and where food deserts are located; examining local, state, and national policies which address food deserts; studying the economic impact food deserts have on Georgia’s economy; exploring any changes that should be made to this state’s tax and economic policies to combat food deserts; and finding areas where the state can assist local governments as they attempt to eradicate food deserts.
