Sen. Donzella James Receives Legislator of the Year Award from Georgia Legislative Black Caucus

ATLANTA (January 5, 2023) — On Friday, December 22, 2023, Sen. Donzella James (D–Atlanta) was honored with the “Legislator of the Year” award by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) during their Christmas Soirée in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the state of Georgia during the 2023 Legislative Session. As Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Urban Affairs and the current Senate Whip for the GLBC, Sen. James introduced and sponsored vital legislation that not only advances affordable housing and equity but also directly aligns with the core objectives of the GLBC.

One of Sen. James’s noteworthy achievements is Senate Bill 125, a legislative endeavor aimed at eliminating restrictions on local governments in Georgia, granting them the flexibility to implement rent control measures and address housing-related challenges more effectively. This legislation resonates with the GLBC’s mission of safeguarding the welfare of Black people, people of color, and disadvantaged citizens of Georgia by promoting equity in housing.

Additionally, Sen. James sponsored Senate Bill 48, which would establish the Equity and Reconciliation Commission of Georgia. This commission seeks to promote equity, unity, and reconciliation throughout Georgia, focusing on addressing systemic disparities—a mission that resonates with the GLBC’s commitment to achieving justice and equality in the state.

Upon receiving the distinguished “Legislator of the Year” award, Sen. James expressed her deep gratitude, remarking, “I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus. This award underscores our caucus’s collective dedication to advancing fairness, inclusivity, and progress. I look forward to continuing our partnership with the GLBC in the 2024 session to further enhance justice and equality in Georgia.”
