ATLANTA (July 22, 2019) | Sen. Donzella James (D – Atlanta) was recently appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve on the Senate Passenger Vehicle Seat Safety Belt Study Committee.
“One of our priorities every year as legislators is to ensure that all who live or travel in Georgia have safe trips on our roadways,” said Sen. James. “We have taken many steps to reduce the number of roadway fatalities over the last several years, including making it illegal to hold a phone while driving, that have led to fewer serious vehicle accidents. However, if an accident were to occur, the proper use of seatbelts has been proven to save lives. As a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) who lost her son due to a drunk driver, I will work diligently to do all I can to increase safety within a vehicle. I look forward to examining potential changes to how Georgia requires seat belts to be used and working with the committee to consider other possible options to enhance passenger safety.”
The Senate Passenger Vehicle Seat Safety Belt Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 366 during the 2019 legislative session. As stated in the resolution, the committee will be composed of five members and will study ways to increase seat belt safety in Georgia. The committee is required to submit their findings by December 1, 2019.
