Sen. David Shafer Visits Little Tikes Academy in Recognition of Georgia Pre-K Week

ShaferATLANTA (October 14, 2014) | Sen. David Shafer (Duluth–R) read to a group of students at the Little Tikes Academy in Duluth on Friday, October 10, in celebration of Georgia Pre-K Week. The fourth annual Georgia Pre-K Week ran from Monday, October 6 to Friday, October 10.

“An early interest in reading is a compelling indicator of success later in life. Strong literacy skills provide the foundation for future learning endeavors, and I commend Voices for Georgia’s Children for their work to support early learning initiatives. It was a pleasure to spend time with the students and teachers of Little Tykes Academy this week,” said Sen. Shafer.

Sponsored by Voices for Georgia’s Children and Pre-K partners throughout the state, Georgia Pre-K Week focuses on the important role of Georgia’s Pre-K program on future academic achievement. While there, Sen. Shafer participated in a reading activity with the children, took a tour of the facility, talked with the staff, and got an up-close look at the many ways the center is supporting early learning.

“Georgia’s nationally recognized Pre-K program supports a critical developmental milestone each year for 84,000 four-year-olds,” said Pat Willis, Executive Director of Voices for Georgia’s Children, a child advocacy organization. “Our state’s outstanding Pre-K program and other health and early learning programs work together to help children read to learn by third grade.”

Sen. Shafer was one of nearly 150 state officials who visited some of the approximately 3,800 Pre-K classrooms located in all 159 counties across Georgia.
