ATLANTA (July 7, 2014) | Lt. Governor Casey Cagle has selected Sen. Jeff Mullis (R — Chickamauga) to chair the Senate 9-1-1 System Modernization Study Committee. Over the next several months, this study committee will analyze the Georgia Emergency Telephone Number 9-1-1 Service Act of 1977 and subsequent amendments; specifically looking for areas where the law can be improved or updated. The committee’s work will emphasize the role of mobile communications in both the collection and dissemination of information that is most valuable in an emergency situation.
“Emergency response is a crucial function of state and local government,” said Sen. Mullis. “With new telecommunications technologies being created and implemented, it is important to look at ways we, as a state, can improve and adapt to best serve the people of Georgia. This issue is near and dear to me, and I’m thankful for this opportunity.”

Mullis has been a leader on these issues, and I’m thankful he’s lending his time and expertise to the important work this committee will perform.”
Sen. Mullis is a former City of Chickamauga Fire Chief. This experience has provided him with extensive knowledge and keen insight regarding Georgia’s emergency communications systems.
The passage of Senate Resolution 1203 during the 2014 legislative session created the Senate 9-1-1 System Modernization Study Committee. As stated in the resolution, the committee consists of five members of the Senate including at least two members from the of the Senate’s standing committee Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee, as appointed by the Lt. Governor.
The committee must report its findings on or before December 1, 2014.
