ATLANTA (June 10, 2020) | Sen. John Albers (R – Roswell) released the following statement on Georgia’s proposed hate crimes legislation:
“We all watched in horror when learning of the events in Brunswick, Minneapolis and Louisville over the last few months. These tragedies, as well as many others who have died since, hurt the very soul of our nation. Some of my dearest friends have experienced discrimination directly. It is real and hurtful. Some people have tried to distract from the peaceful message by looting, stealing and creating chaos. However, this is not the case for most expressing their genuine concerns, angst and desires for change.
Demonstrating and supporting change is foundational to everything American, beginning prior to the American Revolution. The very First Amendment to the Constitution is the freedom of speech which should be cherished and has been a beacon of light around the world. Let’s not lose focus because of a select few.
I have a strong faith and believe the greatest way to glorify God is by serving others. We all have dreams, struggles, joys and sorrows. I am confident most Americans share in this belief. In our society, some have acted terribly and must be brought to justice. However, let us be cautious not to cast a shadow over every person and profession, or we will do the exact opposite of our intentions.
I support the 99% of Americans who everyday do the right thing. Everyone deserves equal rights, respect and the ability to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I also support law enforcement and the 99% of amazing men and women sacrificing every day to protect and serve. I reject the evil, hateful people who want to harm innocent lives and spew their negativity for personal or political gain. Social media detestation warriors and sensational media outlets are a major part of the problem as they create division rather than unity and solutions.
It is easy to judge others by their actions and ourselves by our intentions. Labeling someone for any reason is wrong. The identity of a person does not define their character and contributions. Let’s punish the bad, highlight the good and educate all. I am proud to work with Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan and my senate colleagues to support and pass House Bill 426, the Hate Crimes Law. Working together we ensure our greatest days are still to come.”
