ATLANTA – House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration (R-Auburn) and State Senator Clint Dixon (R-Gwinnett) applauded today’s bipartisan vote by the House on Senate Bill 333, legislation to create the City of Mulberry in northeastern Gwinnett County. If signed by Governor Kemp, SB 333 would place the question of cityhood on the spring primary ballot for residents in the proposed city.
“I am thankful to both my Democrat and Republican colleagues who voted in favor of this legislation in today’s vote, which would create the City of Mulberry without implementing any city property taxes,” said Majority Leader Efstration. “As a resident of the proposed city, I look forward to voting in favor of granting my neighbors local control over planning and zoning in the May 21st primary.”
“I want to thank Leader Efstration for his tireless work to pass this legislation in the House,” said Sen. Dixon. “Out of control growth and traffic congestion are real problems in northeastern Gwinnett and today’s vote sent an important message that the Georgia legislature stands with my local community. I look forward to seeing this issue on the ballot in May.”
Senate Bill 333 now goes to the governor for his signature. If signed by the governor and approved by voters, the City of Mulberry would provide planning and zoning, code enforcement and stormwater management services and would not be allowed to implement a city property tax. More information about the City of Mulberry, including the feasibility study which found the city would be financially viable without collecting any city property taxes, can be found at https://www.cityofmulberryga.com/.
