Gov. Brian Kemp Signs Bill to Stop Discrimination Against Disabled Transplant Recipients

ATLANTA (May 7, 2021) | Yesterday, Gov. Brian Kemp signed House Bill 128, carried in the Senate by Sen. Clint Dixon (R – Gwinnett), into law.

“I was beyond proud to stand beside Gov. Kemp yesterday as he signed House Bill 128, better known as Gracie’s Law, into law,” said Sen. Dixon. “No one should be denied a life-saving organ transplant just because they have a mental or physical disability. Under this new law, if someone is actively discriminated against due to their disability, they will have an immediate pathway through local courts to fight against the discrimination and receive the treatment they need. Additionally, this law will also require a medical provider to get permission from a minor’s parents before putting a “do not resuscitate” order on the patient’s records. This provision in the bill is in honor of Simon Crosier, a 3-month-old Missouri child who died after a doctor placed a “do not resuscitate” order on his medical file. Thanks to HB 128, Georgia is now a safer place for disabled individuals and children.”
