ATLANTA (January 26, 2018) | Sen. Ben Watson (R – Savannah), along with Rep. Jesse Petrea, Rep. Ron Stephens and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), recently announced that the project to widen SR 144 from Timber Trail to Belfast Keller Road in Bryan County is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2018.
“I am very excited to see this project finally gain the approval it needed to begin construction,” said Sen. Watson. “As many as 16,000 vehicles travel along SR 144 each day and ensuring that this major artery in the Bryan County and costal Georgia transportation grid is able to handle this quantity of traffic has been a priority for a while now. This widening will do much more than just reduce traffic, it will increase safety and our economic development prospects. I am thankful for GDOT’s effort to expedite this project and look forward to the completion of this road widening in a few years.”
The funding for this project was made available through the federal process of redistribution, meaning GDOT acquired the funds through states that were not successful in allocating and authorizing their federal funds. Thanks to GDOT’s successful program, additional revenue was made available from the Federal Highway Administration. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2020.
