ATLANTA (October 2, 2018) | Sen. Butch Miller (R – Gainesville) read to students at The Academy Child Development Center in Oakwood, Georgia as part of Georgia Pre-K week.
“Each year I look forward to visiting students at The Academy Child Development Center for Pre-K week,” said Sen. Miller. “They are always eager to listen and learn and it is great to see children from all facets of life within our community. I am grateful for the opportunity to come back for the seventh year in a row and read to these students. It makes me proud to see Georgia’s Pre-K program continue to succeed.”
Voices for Georgia’s Children, which hosts Georgia Pre-K Week, gave this brief history on Georgia’s Pre-K program: “In 1992, Governor Zell Miller launched a pilot program called Georgia Pre-K. The lottery-funded program served 750 four-year-olds in the state. Georgia Pre-K is a voluntary, free program available to all of Georgia’s four-year-olds regardless of parental income. Now, 26 years later, the program has laid a solid foundation for academic excellence and future success in the lives of approximately 1.6 million children.”
