Senate Passes Legislation to Grant DNR Commissioner Boating Authorization at Georgia State Parks

ATLANTA (February 3, 2012) –The Georgia Senate passed SB 319 on Thursday in a unanimous vote. Sponsored by Sen. Rick Jeffares (R-Locust Grove), this legislation would restrict the use of boats on state park lakes and other areas when the Department of Natural Resources has posted a sign or other form of notice restricting such use.

“Every year, residents and visitors alike spend time boating and fishing the waters at one of Georgia’s many state parks,” said. Sen. Jeffares. “The passage of this legislation would grant the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources the authority to determine boating authorization in Georgia’s state park system.”

State law currently restricts certain boats from operating on state park lakes. The passage of SB 319 removes these restrictions by controlling the use of boats on the waters of any park, historic site, or recreational area where a notice has been posted by DNR restricting such boating; exceptions exist for law enforcement and official use by DNR.

In addition, this legislation authorizes boat and wade fishing in areas where it is not otherwise prohibited.

SB 319 will continue its way through the legislative process by traveling to the House of Representatives for a vote.
