ATLANTA (January 15, 2019) | Senator Sheikh Rahman (D – Lawrenceville) was sworn in to the Georgia State Senate to serve Senate District 5 yesterday, January 14, 2019.
“It is such an honor to serve the state of Georgia and specifically district five,” said Sen. Rahman. “I hope that by sharing my story of coming to America to work my first job as a dishwasher to now being a state senator, I can bring hope to the men and women of district five, the state of Georgia and our nation as a whole, that the American Dream is still alive. Thank you to the citizens of district five for allowing me to serve you. I will work my hardest every day to be the voice of those who think their voices are unheard.”
Sen. Rahman was one of five newly elected state senators who joined the returning 51 state senators sworn in by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charles Bethel in the Senate Chamber of the state Capitol. Later in the day, Sen. Rahman held a special swearing in ceremony in the Senate Chamber where he invited several religious leaders, bringing a crowd of diverse backgrounds and religions, to welcome and celebrate his new position as a state senator. Sen. Rahman will serve as the first Muslim state senator, but emphasizes his belief to serve every Georgian, no matter their background.
