Senator Renee Unterman’s “Brunch Bill” Receives Final Passage

ATLANTA (March 13, 2018) | The Georgia House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 17, sponsored by Sen. Renee Unterman (R – Buford), on March 12, 2018. SB 17 is now headed to Governor Nathan Deal’s desk for his signature.

“I am thankful to my colleagues across the hall for their support on SB 17,” said Sen. Unterman. “This bill will place more decision making authority in the hands of the people who will be directly affected by the change. Allowing sales after 11 a.m. will increase small business profits and be good for local economic growth.”

Under current law, the sale of alcoholic beverages after 12:30 p.m. on Sundays is permitted. SB 17, more commonly known as the “Brunch Bill,” would permit local governments to authorize by public referendum the sale of alcoholic beverages at certain establishments after 11 a.m. on Sundays. If authorized, venues such as wineries, hotels and restaurants having gross revenue made up of at least 50 percent food sales would be allowed to do so.

The bill directs the election superintendent of counties and municipalities to issue a call for the purpose of answering the referendum question between 30 and 60 days of SB 17 becoming law.
