ATLANTA (May 9, 2018) | On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, Governor Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 118 into law. Sen. Renee Unterman (R – Buford) sponsored SB 118, which expands health insurance coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
“I am grateful that the Senate, along with leadership from Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, is leading the nation in change for autism coverage,” said Sen. Unterman. “We understand the positive impact early diagnosis and treatment can have on a young child that is diagnosed with ASD. This legislation becoming law will help our children by ensuring they receive the right treatment at the right time without having to worry about costs. Thank you to everyone who had a part in passing SB 118 into law.”
Under current law, children diagnosed with ASD who are six years or younger are covered under health insurance policies. The coverage amount health insurance policies must provide is at least $30,000 annually. SB 118 expands the annual coverage to $35,000 and expands the age to 20 years or younger for treatment coverage. This legislation will become effective on January 1, 2019.
