ATLANTA (March 8, 2018) | Sen. Burt Jones (R –Jackson) welcomed Malcolm Mitchell to the Senate yesterday to commend him for his achievements and to recognize March 7, 2018, as Children’s Literacy Day at the state Capitol with the adoption of Senate Resolution 961.
“It is always such an honor to have Malcolm at the Capitol with us,” said Sen. Jones. “He continues to serve communities across the state and nation as a role model both on and off the field. Each time we have him here, his list of accomplishments seem to have grown, and I am proud to call him a friend, an inspiration and a fellow Georgia Bulldawg.”
Mitchell is well known for his career as an NFL wide receiver with the New England Patriots, where he has played since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2017, he was a member of the Super Bowl LI Championship team. Prior to his NFL career, he left his mark at the University of Georgia where he played from 2011-2015 and is ranked top-10 for nearly all receiving categories at the school.
In addition to his skills on the field, Mitchell has made an enormous impact as a community leader. He is an advocate for children’s literacy and the founder of Read with Malcolm, a national youth literacy program that encourages middle and high school students to mentor and positively impact youth literacy in their own communities. In 2015, Mitchell wrote The Magician’s Hat, which is the best-selling book in the history of the UGA Bookstore. He also received the 2016 Children’s Author of the Year Award from the Georgia Writers Association. In 2017, he was honored at the 20th anniversary of the President’s Summit for America’s Future and received the Promise Hero Award at the America’s Promise Alliance Gala.
