Senate to Study Occupational Diseases of Firefighters and Peace Officers

ATLANTA (March 13, 2015) | Sen. John Albers (R- Roswell) sponsored Senate Resolution 282, which passed the Senate on Friday, which creates a Joint Peace Officer and Firefighter Occupational Disease Study Committee. The committee is charged with examining the various hazards and occupational diseases that are involved when public safety personnel apply for workers’ compensation.

“Peace officers and firefighters bravely serve their communities on a daily basis, repeatedly putting themselves in harm’s way for the public’s safety,” said Sen. Albers. “Often times, these brave heroes are exposed to hazardous conditions that result in life threatening diseases. This study works to ensure these courageous men and women are compensated for their service to the great state of Georgia.”

This committee shall consist of nine members including three Senators appointed by the President of the Senate, three Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House and three members appointed by the State Board of Workers’ Compensation.

Senate Resolution 282 will now move to House of Representatives for consideration.
