Senate Passes Bill for Temporary Driving Permits or ID Cards for Authorized Noncitizens

ATLANTA (March 1, 2013) – The Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 122 today by a vote of 51 to 0. Sponsored by Sen. Hunter Hill (R-Smyrna), this bill allows the issuing of a temporary 120 day driving permit or ID card to authorized noncitizens whose driver’s license or ID card has expired or is about to expire.

“I applaud the unanimous passage of Senate Bill 122, and look forward to its favorable consideration in the House,” said Sen. Hill. “It is simply good business for our state to be more friendly toward individuals who are working to grow Georgia’s economy.” This bill was brought to my attention from the Atlanta Metro Chamber and would help foreign nationals and their companies by synching current federal law with state law.”

Currently, eligible authorized noncitizens are issued a temporary driver’s license or ID card that remains valid during their stay in the U.S. or for five years, whichever is shorter. Under Senate Bill 122, authorized noncitizens whose valid ID has expired or will expire in 30 days, will be eligible to receive a 120 day temporary valid ID. These applicants must have previously filed a request for an extension to stay in the U.S. with the Department of Homeland Security.

The applicant must also present evidence of the application for the extension by submitting a copy of documentation designated by Department of Driver Services. Additional temporary permits will not be authorized unless a future driver’s license or ID card has been issued and expires.

Senate Bill 122 will now travel to the House of Representatives.
