Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers Named Digital Leader by Foundation for Excellence in Education

ATLANTA– (Tuesday, May 24, 2011) Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers was recently announced as a “Digital Leader” by The Foundation for Excellence in Education. Digital Learning Now! is a national campaign advancing the 10 Elements of High Quality Digital Learning, which provide a roadmap for lawmakers and policymakers to integrate digital learning into education. Over 100 Digital Leaders from across the country have joined the effort to use the power of technology to customize education for each and every child.

“Children today are digital learners and we must adapt our classrooms to reflect this fact. Technology is the greatest tool we have to advance learning in ways we’ve never seen before. Digital learning is a vital resource that links our students to the greatest teachers, subjects, and ideas with no limits and no boundaries to how their education can grow and evolve,” said Sen. Rogers. “Education is a policy for which I have great passion and it is an honor to be recognized by the Foundation as a Digital Leader.”

During the 2011 Session, Rogers authored Senate Bill 289, which sought to require elementary and secondary education students to take one course containing online learning and local school systems to provide opportunities for participation in part-time and full-time virtual instruction programs. SB 289 would have also required the Department of Education to issue a report on digital learning methods.

As an advocate for Digital Learning, Rogers serves as a member of Gov. Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education Digital Learning Council, working to identify policies to integrate current and future technological innovations into public education. The Council covers the many facets of digital learning including; online and virtual schools; personalized learning; blended learning; digital content; online and mobile social networks; classroom technology; ensuring equity, security and privacy; and promoting parental choice, among other topics. The Digital Learning Council unites a diverse group of nearly 50 national leaders from education, government, philanthropy, business, technology, and think tanks to develop the roadmap of reform for local, state and federal lawmakers and policymakers.

The Foundation for Excellence in Education is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization dedicated to igniting a movement of reform, state by state, to transform education in America for the 21st century economy. Digital Learning Now! is a national campaign launched by the Foundation, in partnership with the Alliance for Excellence in Education, to advance policies that will create a high quality digital learning environment to better prepare students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in college and careers.
