ATLANTA (February 17, 2014) | The Georgia State Senate passed Senate Resolution 746 today by a vote of 52 to 0. Sen. Renee Unterman (R—Buford), Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, sponsored this legislation to create a state plan for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
“The passage of Senate Resolution 746 today brings us one step closer to the adoption of a statewide plan for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias,” said Senator Unterman. “The State Plan will serve as Georgia’s first line of defense against Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and work to ensure the needs of this population are met.”
Over the previous summer, the Georgia Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias State Task Force met to analyze the state’s ability to address the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s and related dementias in Georgia. Among its recommendations was the adoption of a comprehensive state plan for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
This statewide plan will serve as Georgia’s blueprint for improving dementia prevention and treatment, community services, family support and public awareness. The development of a statewide Alzheimer’s plan will also ensure individuals suffering with dementia, and their caregivers, have reliable, readily-accessible information, support and services.
The State Plan for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias will periodically conduct ongoing reviews and assessments of Alzheimer’s in Georgia while also encouraging coordination among the local community, private sector and state and local government agencies.
Senate Resolution 746 will now transfer to the House of Representatives for consideration.
